Tips to Set Your Puppy Up For Succes

Congratulations on your new puppy! Check out our tips and tricks for socializing and desensitizing your puppy to touch, crates, and vet visits.

1. Preparation & Socialization

Goal: Build a confident, adaptable puppy through safe exposure.

✅ Puppy-proof the environment — Remove hazards (wires, toxic plants, small objects).
✅ Supplies ready — Crate, toys, treats, leash, collar, ID tag, puppy food.
✅ Socialization window (3–14 weeks) — Gradually introduce:
   • People — Variety of ages, appearances, and clothing styles (hats, umbrellas).
   • Sounds — Vacuum, doorbell, traffic, fireworks (play low volume first).
   • Surfaces — Grass, wood floors, concrete, metal grates.
   • Experiences — Car rides, crowds, friendly dogs, handling by strangers.
✅ Positive reinforcement — Pair all new exposures with treats and praise to build positive associations.

2. Crate Training 

Goal: Help puppy feel safe and relaxed in the crate.

✅ Choose the right crate — Big enough to stand, turn, and lie down (not too large).
✅ Make it inviting — Soft bedding, safe chew toys, an item with your scent.
✅ Introduce gradually:
   • Feed meals in the crate with the door open.
   • Toss treats/toys inside to encourage entry.
   • Briefly close door with puppy inside, gradually increase duration.
✅ Crate is never punishment — Always associate with calm, positive moments.
✅ Use for rest and quiet time — Crate helps prevent accidents and destructive behavior.

3. Handling & Veterinary Preparation 

Goal: Teach puppy to tolerate grooming and vet handling comfortably.

✅ Touch conditioning:
   • Briefly touch paws, ears, mouth, and tail → Treat after each touch.
   • Gradually build up to longer handling sessions.
✅ Mimic vet exams:
   • Gently open mouth, lift lips, feel belly, hold still.
   • Reward calm behavior with treats and praise.
✅ Introduce grooming tools — Brush, nail clippers, ear cleaner (let puppy sniff before using).
✅ Visit the vet for fun — Stop by the clinic just for treats and petting (no procedures) to build a positive association.
✅ Comfortable restraint — Teach your puppy to accept being gently held or laid on their side ("relax on mat" exercises help).
